The Authentic Annals Of The Early Hebrews  -

also known as The Book Of Jasher

by Wayne Simpson

A new title and a new edition of a very ancient Hebrew book. The book of Jasher, or Sefer Hayashar in Hebrew, signifies upright or accurate.   Several works exist by this title, but this volume has all the earmarks of the Book of Jasher mentioned in Joshua 10:13 and II Sam. 1:17, thought by many Bible scholars to have been lost.  For a discussion about whether this is the Book of Jasher mentioned in the Bible, click here.   This enigmatic book has never really been lost.   It has been cloaked in obscurity, cloistered away for centuries, and sparsely published, but there have always been those who knew of it's existence.  This volume includes prefaces that tell the fascinating story of the survival of the Book of Jasher down to modern times. Rich in details, it provides insights into a number of biblical episodes that are otherwise unclear, covering the period from creation through Joshua.  It provides proper names and other important clues to establish links between biblical history and secular history, particularly the history of early Europe and Egypt.  It's material flies in the face of traditional chronological relationships to Egyptian and European history. For those bold enough re-examine the traditional concepts of ancient and biblical history, the Book of Jasher can be a gold mine of information. Anyone who is interested in the Bible will immediately recognize the value of the this volume as a parallel text. This new edition contains new features such as chapter and section headings to aid in finding what you seek and a new highly readable text that is far superior to the reprints in circulation.  It contains important prefaces that are not included in other editions, detailing hard to get information about how this book has come down to us.  Eight new appendices expand and explain certain key passages in the book:

Is this the "real" Book of Jasher?

The table of Nations

Who was Rikayon?

The Rape of the Sabines

Who was the Pharaoh of Joseph's Time?

Angeas - The King of Africa

Who was the Pharaoh of the Exodus?

Was Moses a King of Egypt?

Every Bible student is familiar with the King James Bible, right?  Don't be so sure until you have read this volume.  The traditional King James Bible that most of us have known is actially a 19th century revision of the original.  It was changed in more ways that you would imagine.   Now you can see the real thing.  The language was more archaic and the spelling was very different, but more than that, the contents are different.  Bible students usually do not realize that the original King James Bible also contained the books of the Apocrypha, and it continued to until well into the nineteenth century.

The Formation Of The Christian Biblical Canon

by

Lee M. McDonald

formatn.jpg (11403 bytes)

Now and then a book comes along that is so definitive that it has the power to change minds.  It states its case so clearly, and  presents its thesis so thoroughly and logically that there can be no meaningful challenge.  This is such a book.   If you have ever wondered how the Bible came to be, this is a must read.   Though, as its title suggests, it is written from a Christian perspective,  it deals objectively and at considerable length with the Hebrew scriptures that preceded the full Christian canon.  So whether you accept the Christian canon or only the Hebrew canon, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Most importantly, it deals with the very concept of canon itself.  It will be surprising to some that our modern notion of a canon simply did not exist during the centuries in which the Bible was being written.  The implications of this are far reaching.  McDonald takes us through the various metamorphoses of  the Bible, showing that it was not until the time of Constantine (4th century) when an official Christian canon emerged under the authority of the Roman Empire.  That should be enough to raise concern in itself.   Ironically, the Jewish authorities reacted to this by altering their own concept of canon, thus distancing themselves from Christianity.  McDonald presents this material very clearly and in an easily read manner.

This, in my opinion, is one of the most important books of modern times.  In the end,  McDonald leaves us with a clear cut understanding of the steps that took place and the personalities involved.  There are surprises along the way, too.  We find that the Bible is a much different book than we may have once imagined.   McDonald does not directly tell us what we should believe (a man after my own heart).  That is up to you as always.   But he gives us valuable tools to use.  After reading it you will never be uninformed about the canonicity issue again.   Not all the answers to the canonicity issue can be found here, but no analysis of the issue would be complete without this information.
